VOL. 55   /  KIDDOS

In our survey a couple weeks back, many of you expressed interest in more kid-friendly ideas. Little did you know we had a kid-themed issue already lined up!

To those readers who may not have children, don't check out just yet. Who knows when you'll next need to entertain family or friends with little ones? Consider this ammo for that moment.

Without further ado, meet this week's guest editor: Steve Krieger. His credentials? He's a father of four, all under the age of seven, making him an expert on entertaining kids in Richmond. Hailing from Midlothian, he never imagined that he’d end up living here, but it was time abroad that gave him new appreciation for our fair city. Now he works at a Richmond-based consulting company and uses weekends to break out of the house with the whole fam to explore the city. Take it away, Steve!

Hi there! When it comes to young kids, everyone knows about Belle Isle, Maymont, Brown's Island, etc. I wanted to recommend a few other kid-friendly spots that are supremely enjoyable for all.

Upper

Shirley

A vineyard may not be the first thing that comes to mind when dreaming of family outings, but newly-minted Upper Shirley Vineyards packs quite a punch: less than 30 minutes from RVA, open fields for picnics/ball throwing/frisbee/general kid chasing, panoramic views of the tidal James River, and of course, delicious vino.

Bonus: Engender Instagram envy from all of your friends and get your cardio fix by biking there via the Virginia Capital Trail.

Capitol

Square

No, not the newly-renovated underground museum, though, that's great too. The Capitol Square is the 12-acre public park surrounding the historic capitol, within the perimeter of Broad, Bank, 9th and Governor Streets. This is our go-to “we’re done eating dinner, but it’s not bedtime yet” spot.

The brick-lined walkways are shaded by large magnolia trees and feature statues as well as fountains celebrating historical Virginians. It’s a fun place to meander on a steamy RVA night. The capitol is perched on the top of Shockoe Hill, and the view from the stairs is killer – any self-respecting D.C. monument wishes it could gaze out on such a view.

Tip: If you go after 5pm or on a weekend, parking is pretty easy to come by.

Huguenot

Flatwater

A somewhat hidden gem of the James River Park System, Huguenot Flatwater is directly underneath the Huguenot Bridge and encompasses the water just downstream of the bridge and all the way upstream to Bosher's Dam (beneath Chippenham).

Centrally located, it's a prime spot for a weekday pre-work paddle. When it's warm, you're guaranteed to see Osprey and you've got a great chance of spotting bald eagles and otters, as well. When the river water level is not too high, the paddle is about 35 minutes from the put-in to the mist from Bosher’s dam - the perfect distance for a light workout before hopping back in your car and heading to work.

VOL. 54  /  CADENCE

Much love to those who filled out last week's survey. We'll use that feedback to serve you better as we head into our second year.

Some of you shared that you wished you could easily refer back to past issues. We've got you covered! Check out the newsletter archive on our site!

Now on to getting out there!

Pomona

Plants

We’ve been plant-obsessed for a while, so we were excited to hear that Pomona Plants has moved to a brand new home to expand and transform their company. Partnering with recently launched women-owned Hazel Witch Farm, the shop will feature herbs and flowers, along with native plants from TreeLab.

And Pomona isn’t taking over just any old space, but the former home of much-loved Roaring Pines. Pomona will continue the legacy of Roaring Pines' famed food and beverage service, while Roaring Pines’s Drew Dayberry continues to pursue his Dayberry Brooms company.

Enjoy a cozy retail experience and sip on something refreshing all in one. Visit this weekend and bring a new plant friend home!

Cycle for Life

Calling all cyclists! Or, you know, people who like bikes. There's a new opportunity to put your hobby to work for good.

The inaugural Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Cycle for Life takes off from Hardywood West Creek on October 28 to benefit the search for a cure.

This event has a course for all levels of cyclist. For you athletes out there, the 65-mile route through some of good ole Virginia rolling hills should provide a nice challenge. If you prefer a more laid-back cadence, pedal to the metal along either the 15-mile or 22-mile route options.

Cap off the day at the finish-line reception with a Passion For A Cure beer, also benefitting CFF.

VOL. 53  /  BIRTHDAY!

Dear Member (that’s you),

Today is our one-year anniversary. Whether you’ve been a ride-or-die since Volume 1 or you just signed up this week, thank you so much for being a part of Here. Thank you for being hungry to explore our awesome city.

It’s our birthday, so we’ve got presents and cake. Seriously.

For you, the ultimate guide to celebrating birthdays in Richmond is below.

For us, we wanted to humbly ask you for a little present. Will you please share Here. with some of your fellow Richmond-obsessed friends? If you forward this email (copy hi@hereweekly.com) or share this Facebook post, we will enter you to win one of five $20 gift certificates to Shyndigz. Thank you in advance!

None of this would be possible without Ali's design genius, Kate's eye for photography and our small army of interns keeping us on track.

THANK YOU!! We appreciate you. More opportunities for cake below; read on!

Celebrate!

RVA

First stop on our birthday ideas tour: Celebrate! RVA.

What better way to celebrate your own birthday than to celebrate a child's birthday? We are fully enamored, head-over-heels crazy about the mission of Celebrate! RVA. This non-profit gives disadvantaged children a fun, safe, memorable birthday party.

Their next big party/fundraiser isn’t until March, but when your birthday rolls around, you could sponsor a child’s birthday for just $15. Or get a group of friends together to make birthday cards for the kids. Donate party supplies; volunteer. There are so many options. You can even enter a raffle to win a car, all proceeds benefitting Celebrate! RVA.

Street Art

Sprint

Another non-traditional birthday activity! Invite your friends to go on a run. But with art and beer.

Every Tuesday evening through the end of October, Sportsbackers is treating Richmond as a living gallery as they guide a run past some of our city’s sprawling street art and murals. The four-mile run begins and ends at a brewery or local watering hole, while looping through a neighborhood or two to show you the sights. Every week they tackle a new part of town.

By the time you’ve finished those four miles, you’ll have earned that celebratory beer!
