Meet James Millner, this week's guest editor! As the director of Virginia Pride, James works tirelessly to make the Richmond based nonprofit a vehicle for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender awareness, networking and education throughout Virginia. Take it away James …
June is National LGBTQ Pride Month, when we reflect on, celebrate and recommit to the fight for LGBTQ equality. June is also the month in which LGBTQ people have historically been granted rights by the United States Supreme Court, including the right to marry and the right to work without fear of being denied a job or fired because of our sexual orientation or gender identity. Here are just a few of the many ways you can celebrate Pride Month here in the River City!
Pride
at The Market
Join us this Saturday, June 26, at 17th Street Market as VA Pride presents “Pride at the Market” in partnership with the Richmond Department of Recreation and Parks and the Shockoe Bottom Neighborhood Association. We’ll host a fabulous DJ Dance Party and Drag show featuring some of Richmond’s biggest divas! You can purchase food and drinks, including adult beverages, from restaurants along the Market and consume them outside!
VA Pride is teaming up with Common House in Richmond to host a happy hour on Wednesday, June 30 from 6-8 pm to support VA Pride, Stonewall Sports—Richmond, and Black Pride RVA! A portion of all beverage proceeds will be donated to supporting Virginia Pride’s mission of building LGBTQ awareness and education opportunities in the broader Commonwealth region. Join us as we honor all the community organizers, activists, advocates, and allies who continue to do the work for a more loving and a more equal future. Bring your friends, grab a pride-themed drink, and enjoy.
Be sure to check out how the City of Richmond is celebrating Pride Month! There’s a pride flag flying over City Hall for the first time ever recognizing the LGBTQ community. Nearby you’ll find Main Street Station illuminated in rainbow colors and Dominion Energy is displaying a special pride-themed light show every night. Never before has so much been done to commemorate LGBTQ Pride Month in RVA!
Richmond-based alternative rock singer-songwriter, Rachel Leyco, is performing at Starr Hill Richmond Beer Hall & Rooftop tonight, Thursday, June 24, for a special PRIDE month show as part of the brewery's Sunset Solo Series. Make sure to order a Love Wheat Beer and Starr Hill will donate $1 to VA Pride from every one sold during the month of June.
